So, afternoon tea at the OGH! Where do I start?

I love an afternoon tea and since becoming coeliac I haven’t had one! Of course, I’ve had sandwiches, scones and cakes since being coeliac, but never from the OGH and never as part of a gluten-free afternoon tea. They started off by obviously serving tea, we opted for the traditional english breakfast tea which of course is naturally gluten-free.

Now we move on to the sandwiches! I love a fancy sandwich, especially from afternoon tea, as they always just hit different! The fillings were beef with horseradish sauce which was sooo good. The horseradish wasn’t too overpowering and the overwhelming taste was beef which is what I prefer. I then had a cream cheese and cucumber which is one of my firm favourites for an afternoon tea. Because the cucumber is so thin, it just tastes super fancy! I then had my all time favourite which is chicken mayo. It definitely lived up to expectations and I loved the gluten-free one almost as much as the original. For me, the only downside was they didn’t put flakes almonds round the edge, which they would normally do, but I obviously understand that if u had a nut allergy, that is more inclusive. They also had an egg mayonnaise and smoked salmon however I’m not a massive fan of either of those fillings.

Next up the scones! I love a scone but I’ve only ever had a cheese scone gluten-free. I’ll be honest, these scones weren’t my favourite as they were quite dry and crumbly, I assume because a lot of rice flour was used so I believe with a few simple changes they could be perfect.

And the cakes! The cake selection in the gluten-free afternoon tea consisted of a fruit skewer, a cherry bakewell style cake, a lemon drizzle cake and a brownie. The fruit skewer was enjoyable however when you compare it to the fruit tart that is in the normal afternoon tea it obviously isn’t the same but if I hadn’t had known that I probably would have enjoyed it more. The brownie was lovely and super rich and sticky, but my favourite was the cherry bakewell cake which tasted so nice and the cake was as good as a normal sponge. I didn’t try the lemon drizzle cake however it looked soft and spongy as you would expect.

Overall, I enjoyed my afternoon tea despite the scones and would go there again for a gluten-free afternoon tea. I rate it a 7/10!
