So, I'm back from uni on a quick business trip! The uni let me come over once a year and speak in schools about university life which is fun and this year it coincided with one of my friend's birthdays.
For her birthday, she chose to go to China Red which I haven't eaten at since being coeliac so was excited to try it. I phoned up in advance to explain my situation and they told me to look on their app as gluten-free options were marked on there. It is slightly annoying you have to download the app to see the gluten-free options as they aren't marked on their website but I was still pleased they were marked somewhere so I had time to have a good look at the menu before I went. Research is always key!
On the phone, they explained how they substitute egg noodles for rice noodles and have gluten-free soy sauce, sweet and sour sauce and lemon sauce available so I went in with a really positive mindset.
So, roll on Saturday night, we got there and I ordered a rekorderlig cider because you can’t go wrong once you have one of those aha!
So overall the food was really good. I went for Hong Kong Style Sweet and Sour Chicken with Egg Fried Rice. Both of which were naturally gluten-free. Only downside was there wasn’t a gluten-free duck pancake option which used to be my favourite :(((
I was really pleased because I thought the chicken would be ‘naked’ if you like but it had a very thin gluten-free batter on it which I was so happy about as I do miss batter aha. The rice was also nice and fluffy, which is exactly what you want!
The only thing I would say is the fact that there are no gluten-free duck pancake options. Personally, as someone who used to love duck pancakes and really misses them, that would have been the cherry on top of the cake but I know that’s a tall order. On the menu, it does state that there is a gluten free alternative which is a lettuce leaf, however for me, I would much rather a pancake.
Overall though, I was really pleased with China Red as a lot of my pre-coeliac options I couldn’t have, so I really enjoyed the new dishes I tried and look forward to going back and trying some more new ones next time!
